A common technique for achieving impedance matching on circuit boards is the differential transmission line. It consists of two parallel wires that have equal but opposite signals, thus cancelling out noise and interference. Differential transmission lines are commonly used for high-speed digital signal transmission and RF applications such as high-speed serial data transmission interfaces and wireless communication systems. The desired impedance matching can be achieved by controlling the width, spacing and distance between layers of the differential transmission line.


In order to achieve accurate impedance control, circuit board manufacturing typically employs advanced manufacturing processes and materials. For example, commonly used circuit board materials such as FR-4 (glass fibre reinforced epoxy) and PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) have reliable impedance characteristics. Manufacturers use precise thickness control and dielectric materials between layers to ensure consistent impedance values.
